Calling all schoolchildren! Get involved in:
The 1Book4Africa Campaign World Book Day March 1st 2012
Goal of the campaign
For school children in Ireland to give a gift of a book that they have read and love to an African Child on World Book Day 1st March 2012
Every child will be asked to bring a book and €2 to their teacher during the week of World Book Day 2012 (March 1st). To be eligible your child’s school will need to be registered with Nurture Africa.
Why?
In Uganda, only 5% of primary schools have adequate reading materials. Children therefore rarely get the opportunity to read a book. This makes English literacy and comprehension very difficult. Research shows that children who have access to books have an increased chance of staying in school and gaining a proper education (World Vision 2009).
Target
To send over 10,000 children’s books to Uganda in 2012.
How?
You can help us achieve this by bringing a book in to your school with €2. The gift of €2 is to help us ship the books over to Africa and to help us build libraries for the books.
Why €2?
€1 is required to ship the book over to Uganda. The other €1 is used to hire librarians for the libraries where the books are going and also to build community libraries to keep these books.
Impact
- Over 8000 children’s books sent over to Uganda in 2011.
- One children’s library built
- Three children’s libraries getting more books
- 30 schools with over 10,000 children in them using these Nurture Africa children’s community libraries
